Aha, we are beginning to get to the meaty bit of the competition. Now we are beginning to see a divide between the top dogs and the early fallers. Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet; with the double point system, there is always time for a surprise flight to success. However, there are some definite people with a strong advantage. Let’s put it this way – some of you are going to be punching the air with joy, while the rest of you are going to spend the night crafting spiteful voodoo dolls of each other.

Round Analysis

Ah, those pesky double pointers. Sometimes they work miracles. Satu from Fairytale Pictures has worked wonders with her choosing of Tessa Thompson. It seemed like an odd pick at first – that talented, but little-known star from Thor: Ragnarok, appearing in an indie Netflix movie (and let’s be honest, Netflix’s movies, as this round’s Mute proves, aren’t usually something worth investing faith in). But it definitely paid off, Satu being the biggest scorer of the week, jumping an astonishing 33 points (Joel Edgerton deserves praise for that too – one of the most work-obsessed actors in the industry at the moment). Nestled comfortably in second place, she is going to be a hard one to beat.

Guess next time I will read the script before signing up, LOLZ

But then there are the double point picks that go horrifically wrong. Film Grimoire might have climbed a respectable 11 points up the ladder, but at the cost of a misfired double point pick. Oprah Winfrey seemed like a sure thing, the most interesting supporting part in Disney’s hyped A Wrinkle In Time. However, the movie has been met with an apathetic appreciation, Winfrey getting the briefest of mentions in Empire’s review. A mere three points, doubled to six for Grimoire, but especially at this crucial phase of the game, losing your double point player might result in the first team to crash and burn. Hopefully Grimoire can pull a consistent streak out of the bag to snatch glory from the likes of Vinnieh and Satu.

In other news, there are success stories and failures across the board. Marked Movies and Cinema Parrot Disco find themselves victims to a statistical anomaly: who would have thought a bad Joaquin Phoenix performance even possible? It is hard not to feel a prang of sadness at the utter unexpected stalling in the Phoenix department. Myself, over at Oracle of Film, is feeling similar regret with Alicia Vikander, stranded in a dead weight of a Lara Croft movie. Meanwhile everyone else is climbing steadily forward – the odd four point victories from the likes of Rudd and Freeman, meaning that a methodical but vital climb is happening across the table. Even Movie Rob must be happy with an unexpected cameo point from Sam Rockwell. Can’t argue with free points…
