The gun is held up in the air. The trigger is pulled. And with a sudden bang, the race begins, some runners rocketing into an impressive early lead.

We are in the fourth year of my little annual competition and I have noticed a few changes to this year’s teams, perhaps experience settling into the decision making. A lot of the teams this year have chosen an early lead, over putting their faith in the later movies. Perhaps they want the confidence or satisfaction of being in the top running for at least once in the year. Perhaps they have more faith in the movies hyped at the Golden Globes or BAFTAs. But, with most of the teams putting a lot of faith in The Shape of the Water (spoiler alert: your gambles have paid off spectacularly), I was surprised at some of the high scores in the first round of this competition. But those with minor scores, or yet to even start their ascent, do not panic. It is too early to celebrate yet and grabbing early points is only one tactic of many. The other major difference this year is that I cannot spot a weak team in the running. Every other year, with the greatest respect, there have been a handful of teams that, sadly, were never going to do well. I could predict last place most years. This year, I am absolutely clueless as to how 2018 will unfold. And that gives us a race to the finish line that is thrilling from the very first moment.

Round Analysis

Wow, just wow! There have already been some fine uses of the new Double Point rule, which have seen a massive jump up in some of the scores. Vinnieh is obviously the one to talk about, already an astonishing 35 points in the lead. Last year, Vinnieh had the strongest first round, but fell away. Hopefully, a reliance on The Shape of Water won’t write him out of the running. However, while the likes of Vinnieh, Abbi Osbiston and Cinema Parrot Disco rushing into the distance might dishearten some, perhaps it is those who haven’t used their double pointers yet that should be the bigger worry. It makes the likes of Marked Movies and Rhyme and Reason the bigger threats, because they have big scores without leaning too heavily on their bonus points. And who’s that handsome devil in third place who still has a double point actor to use? My money’s on him!

  1. Excellent start! And congrats Vinnie.
I’ve just realised that I’ve made a mistake in Christian Bale. Am I right in saying that I’ve missed out on points for Hostiles? Was that last months Empire?
